Seismic Vulnerability Assessment of Portuguese Adobe Buildings

Adobe construction represents 5.3% of the total Portuguese building stock according to latest National Housing Census. The distribution these adobe buildings is scattered across country, with higher density in central region and Algarve south, where seismic hazard highest. A large proportion are still use for residential commercial purposes historical significance, contributing cultural heritage country. known exhibit low resistance due their brittle behavior, thus making them vulnerable ground shaking more prone structural damage that can potentially cause human fatalities. Three one-story, two-stories, two-stories plus an attic were numerically modeled using solid contact elements. Calibration validation material properties carried out following experimental results. set 30 motion records bi-directional components selected, non-linear time-history analyses performed until complete collapse occurred. Two novel engineering demand parameters (EDPs) used, thresholds proposed. Finally, fragility fatality vulnerability functions derived. These be used directly risk assessment studies.
